Anti-inflamatory Golden Paste Recipe
Pup Paste Recipe
A Pup Plates version of traditional Golden Paste. Golden paste is made to enhance the bioavailability of turmeric’s incredible anti-inflammatory and pain relief effects. Turmeric is also antimicrobial, has antibacterial properties, has antioxidant & anti-aging benefits and much more! Supplementing your pup’s food with a up to a tablespoon of this per day (for large dogs, 1 teaspoon for littles) can relief pain associated with arthritis, hip dysplasia, and even pulled muscles or torn ligaments like CCL (Canine Crucial Ligament) injuries. We were able to use this and other herbs for our dog’s arthritis pain management for years before needing something stronger. Prescription drugs are hard on the organs, among other things. Be your best friend’s best friend- ask questions, educate yourself when you can, and keep them healthy--- naturally!
INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup (125 ml / 60g) turmeric powder
• 1 cup water (250 ml) plus extra water in reserve, if needed
• 1/3 cup (70 ml) coconut oil (use raw, unrefined, cold-pressed)- Recommended because of the medium chain fatty acids
OR linseed oil (flaxseed)
OR olive oil (use virgin / extra virgin)
• 2 - 3 teaspoons freshly cracked (ground) black pepper • 1-2 Tablespoons (20g) ginger
• ½ teaspoon spirulina (8g) can be added for extra nutrients/antioxidants
• 1 teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon may be added for flavor and additional benefits. Do NOT use cassia cinnamon as it is TOXIC to dogs! *if something says ‘cinnamon’ only, it is cassia.
Directions:
1) Bring the turmeric, ginger and water to a boil in a saucepan, then lower heat and simmer until you have a thick paste. This should take about 7-10 minutes and you may need to add the extra water along the way for good consistency. *Note: If using RAW Turmeric, extend simmer time to 30 minutes.
2) Add the freshly cracked (ground) pepper, coconut oil. Stir until fully combined and texture is smooth (if coconut oil is hard, it should melt in the mixture). Let cool.
3) Add spirulina and/or Ceylon cinnamon - if including - AFTER cooking, when it has been removed from heat and cooled down (still warm to touch but not burning), 10 minutes or so later. Mix thoroughly and let cool completely.
Tip: Once your Pup Paste is cooled completely it should feel like a thick, pliable paste. Squish it into molds or ice cube trays and freeze in the portions for your dog’s size so you can just pop one out and mix it in!
Do not use pre- ground pepper. The active ingredient in black pepper (piperine) is oxidized when exposed to the air and degraded by light, so not much is left in the pre-ground pepper purchased in the store.
Honey or sweeteners are not necessary and they provoke inflammation. However, if your dog refuses the taste, a small amount of honey can be added.
Try 1/4 of a teaspoon, twice a day (with food and water), and build up to 1/2 teaspoon twice a day, for the first 4-5 days.
For greater effect, increase to 3/4 of a teaspoon – 1.5 teaspoons per meal. There is no need to exceed a tablespoon per day for large dogs. It is best to feed small amounts routinely (3-5 times per day even) to keep it in your (or their) system, but since that is difficult when caring for animals to administer that frequently, amounts have been modified to twice per day recommendations.
When adding turmeric to your dog’s diet for the first time, if there are any signs of loose stools or upset stomach then you may wish to reduce your serving and remain at a lower amount for a longer period.
Pup Paste can be kept in the fridge for 4-6 weeks or frozen for 3 months. Freezing it in ice cube trays makes it super convenient to serve and keep!
